Poets, orators, and great writers all have a say about the beauty of a new day. The promise and the hope that each morning brings are enough to make us want to get up. And make the most of the day, for ourselves, our loved ones, and the social community we move in.

Expectations from our day

Every day when we wake up, we hope and expect that our day will be good. But how our day unfolds and concludes is entirely up to us. On how we begin our day. How we respond or react to events. Or whether we actually run our day or let our day run us.

All the grudges, pain, and embarrassment of yesterday have passed. Therefore, we should not allow it to ruin this new day we’ve been given.

But if yesterday was great, we should also not assume though that our new day will be the same.

Remember that each day is unique. But the outcome, whether it becomes a good day or bad is on us. We have the power to define how our day should be.

Your template for a good day

Starting off your day by being mindful of how to run it will enable you to face the challenges in a positive manner. Here are some suggestions you can use as a template for a good day.

Wake up early

This is for you to have a quiet morning that you can dedicate totally to yourself. By waking up early, you can have a leisurely start to your day. And not just rushing to make breakfast or dash out the door to work.

However, if you cannot commit to waking up early for an hour or so, a few minutes before your usual wake-up time should do.

The goal here is to avoid feeling rushed at the start of your day. Being calm and relaxed because you woke up early sets a positive tone for the rest of your day.

Picture a good day

Have a positive mental picture of how your day should be. For example, imagine yourself finalizing and submitting a report early, publishing a great article, preparing a healthy and tasty meal for the family, and so on.

Starting your day with a positive mindset allows you to be more relaxed, empathetic, and reasonable throughout the day.

Smile

Put on a happy face at the start of the day.

In the mirror, smile to yourself. This will immediately make you feel better and more prepared to face the day ahead.

Stretch

Stretch your body for a few minutes. It will help to dispel any lingering traces of sleep and fully and fully wake you up.

Stretching is also a good way to improve your mood. So start your day off right by stretching those muscles.

Say thanks

Be grateful for another day you’ve been given. A short “thank you” should be enough. Gratitude doesn’t have to be a chore.

But if you are emotionally invested, you can make a list of everything you are grateful for to help you get in a good mood.

Drink water

Drinking water first thing in the morning aids your body’s rehydration after a long night’s sleep.

Aside from rehydrating your body, drinking water after waking up has been shown to improve weight, mood, skin, and kidneys.

Now that should be incentive enough for your to drink a glass or two of water. Not only in the morning but throughout the day.

Be present

Begin your day by being fully present. That is, don’t let technology run you first thing in the morning.

Do not reach for your phone as soon as you wake up to check social media or watch the news. These things will have a negative impact on you and ruin the rest of your day.

You can choose from a wide variety of things to do that do not involve technology, such as:

All of these activities promise, if not ensure, a great day for you.

A Poem: Daylight’s Promise

As the dark grapples to linger
Orange beams reach longer
The night becomes a memory to remember.
Yellow streaks win
A glorious day shall begin.
A new beginning, a fresh start
Darkness forced to depart
So now light engages the heart.
Set out then to make hay
Blessings for you I pray.
Hope the sunrise brings
Removes doubts of yesterday that cling
Erased by sparkly morning’s wings.
Mistakes from the previous day forgotten
A new day, another day to take action.
Look forward to the morning shine
The promise a day gives you can’t outline
The beauty of the first light only you can define.
Be grateful and be graceful then
For the daylight that’s beyond your ken.
